Ordinary pedigree breeding pairs dogs of the same breed and an eligible variety after appropriate checks. The word Spitz does not make a Pomeranian, Husky, Shiba and Samoyed interchangeable mates. A cross between varieties needs separate consideration of registration and medical suitability.

What “can be mated” means here
There are three questions: is pregnancy biologically possible, is the pairing medically appropriate, and will the organisation recognise the litter? A yes to the first guarantees neither of the others. This guide supports planning pedigree breeding; it does not approve two individual dogs.
Even within one breed, restricted registration, incomplete screening, relatedness or other conditions may prevent a pairing. Check identification, breed status and the rules for the future litter before making an arrangement.
Common combinations at a glance
The status below concerns ordinary pedigree breeding. An exception requires a written decision from the organisation registering the offspring; the stud owner’s assurance is not enough.
| Combination | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|
| Pomeranian × Pomeranian; Klein × Klein; Mittel × Mittel; Gross × Gross; Wolfsspitz × Wolfsspitz | The starting point for same-variety selection. Individual eligibility still depends on health, ancestry, colour and registry rules. |
| Pomeranian × Klein; Klein × Mittel; Mittel × Gross | No automatic permission. Adjacent sizes require applicable rules and an agreed programme, alongside veterinary assessment. |
| Pomeranian × Mittel, Gross or Wolfsspitz | Do not plan as an ordinary size-variety pairing. One shared standard or a promise of small puppies does not justify the size gap. |
| Husky × Husky; Samoyed × Samoyed; Malamute × Malamute; Shiba × Shiba | Selection within the respective breed. Each needs its own health assessments and documentation. |
| Japanese Spitz × Volpino / German Spitz; Husky × Malamute / Samoyed; different Laika breeds | Different breeds. Do not treat this as ordinary purebred mating; similar appearance grants neither permission nor predictable results. |
| Akita × American Akita; Shiba × Akita | Different breeds under FCI classification. Registration as an ordinary same-breed litter does not follow automatically. |
| Pomeranian × Husky (“Pomsky”), Spitz × Chihuahua and other designer combinations | Crossbreeding. A mixture’s name does not establish health, stable adult size or breed recognition. Do not choose such a pairing without specialist involvement. |
| Greenland Dog × Canadian Eskimo Dog | A specific example listed by FCI. It requires an official programme and national authorisation, not unrestricted crossing. |

Adjacent size does not itself grant permission
FCI provides for nationally authorised cross-variety programmes and recommends the nearest size varieties. Club rules may be stricter: Germany’s Verein für Deutsche Spitze 2024 rules prohibit cross-variety matings. Consult the organisation responsible for the proposed litter.

A large male and a small female
Difficult birth can involve maternal, fetal and labour factors; the male’s weight alone is not a reliable prediction. A substantial size difference needs discussion with a reproductive veterinarian. A smaller sire also cannot guarantee small fetuses or an easy delivery.
Check colour and genetics separately
Ask the registry to review colour-combination restrictions and the veterinarian to review investigations and family history. Do not substitute an observation that both dogs look healthy. Similar-looking dogs may carry different inherited variants; a rare colour does not justify a risky combination.
Obtain an applicable answer before travelling
Send the club registration numbers, exact variety names, sexes, ages and colours. Ask whether this particular litter can be registered, which prior approval is required and how the puppies’ variety will be recorded. Keep the response and the version of the rules.
Separately provide the veterinarian with health reports, previous birth history and relatedness information. Registry permission does not remove an unfavourable medical risk. Equally, medical ability to become pregnant does not justify promising recognised pedigree papers when registration requirements are not met.
When to abandon or postpone the plan
Pause if identification cannot be verified, results are withheld, permission is promised retrospectively or the current season is being used to pressure a decision. Establish the rationale before the dogs meet. Accidental mating needs veterinary advice and honest parentage records; it does not turn an exception into a general rule.
