Pomeranian coat colours and inheritance in breeding

Discuss coat colour after health and ancestry when considering a pairing. An attractive colour name does not identify the variants a dog carries or establish how its offspring would be registered.

Keep three questions separate

Record the visible colour, the genetic result and acceptance under the relevant registry separately. They answer different questions. A laboratory examines a submitted sample, a registry applies its documentation and a veterinarian assesses health. One answer cannot stand in for the other two.

Why similar-looking dogs can produce different colours

Coat colour starts with two pigment types, eumelanin and phaeomelanin. Different genes affect their production, distribution and intensity, so a single test does not describe a puppy’s entire future appearance. The A, E, K and B loci in a report refer to different parts of this system.

For example, e/e at the E locus can conceal eumelanin-based patterns in the coat. White spotting and dilution of red pigment also have different genetic explanations. Two Pomeranians appearing equally pale in a photograph need not carry the same variants.

Why merle predictions can be complicated

Merle depends on characteristics of an insertion in the PMEL gene, not merely its presence. Research has described multiple variants and mosaicism, in which one dog has genetically different cell populations. A short result from an older test may therefore leave relevant questions about a proposed pairing unanswered.

Research in another breed cannot provide an exact Pomeranian-specific frequency of defects. If merle occurs in the ancestry but the coat appears solid, a photograph alone is insufficient. Establish which test was performed and how the laboratory interprets those particular results before proceeding.

Why a photograph cannot exclude merle

UC Davis describes weakly expressed merle and patterns hidden by other colour variants. When both parents carry merle variants, offspring may have hearing or eye defects; complex results require laboratory interpretation. Do not plan a merle-to-merle pairing.

Read the actual test report

Look beyond the panel’s marketing name for the variant tested, result, dog identification and method limitations. A claim that a panel is clear, without the report, cannot establish whether the relevant question was tested. Ask the laboratory whether clarification or another sample is necessary.

Do not transfer one laboratory’s letter codes into another laboratory’s chart because they look similar. Request a written inheritance explanation for an ambiguous result. Photographs of the parents may add context but cannot replace a sample and interpretation.

Check the breed standard separately

FCI Standard 97 lists accepted colours by variety and does not include merle. Acceptance in that system is a separate issue from clinical risk. For another registry, consult its own current standard.

Can the litter’s colours be promised?

Coat colour involves interactions between several genomic regions. The appearance of the parents does not necessarily reveal every inherited variant. A prediction based on known results expresses probability, rather than an order for a fixed number of puppies of each colour.

Keep health central to the decision

Compare examinations, behaviour, structure and family information first. Consider colour restrictions afterwards. If obtaining a particular colour requires overlooking disease or close relatedness, reconsider the breeding objective itself.

Use verifiable wording in agreements and advertisements. An unusual colour is not evidence of exceptional health, and an adult shade cannot be promised for every puppy. Preserve the original laboratory report: its contents and identification are useful to a buyer or veterinarian in a way that a promotional badge is not.
