Volpino Italiano: a small Italian Spitz with an alert voice

The Volpino Italiano is a distinct Italian breed. Calling it an Italian Spitz describes its general appearance; it does not make it a Pomeranian variety. Its appeal lies in a compact body, lively interaction and readiness to notice its surroundings. A suitable household has room for both an active companion and some deliberate work on barking.

Size and colours: use the 2023 standard

FCI Standard 195 gives heights at the withers of 27–30 cm for males and 25–28 cm for females. The 2023 standard describes white, red and black; other colours are also accepted. Weight must suit size, rather than meet a fixed kilogram range.

This matters when comparing advertisements. A claim that only a white dog can be authentic does not reflect the present standard. Colour, verified ancestry and the quality of rearing are separate questions. Look at adult structure as well as photographs: abundant hair makes both the body outline and actual height difficult to judge.

A watchdog voice, not a protection dog

The breed club ATAVI explains the Volpino's watchdog role primarily as sounding an alarm. These small dogs historically accompanied carts and lived around farms. Their size does not make them physical protection dogs, and alertness should not be confused with persistent fear of ordinary events.

For apartment living, teaching an end to the alert is more realistic than expecting silence. A quiet resting place away from the entrance, rewarding a return to the owner and gradual exposure to hallway sounds can form part of a plan. Let visitors arrive without crowding over the puppy. Assess an individual dog's confidence by its ability to recover and resume normal activity.

Daily activity with a clear stopping point

A useful day combines a walk with opportunities to investigate scents, a short learning session and undisturbed rest. Simple skills such as coming when called, moving away from a doorway and waiting for a door to open have immediate value with an observant companion.

Extra excitement is not always the best response to an excited dog. Build a transition from movement to rest into the day. A plan consisting only of carrying the dog or leaving it in a garden misses the shared activity that makes this type of companion rewarding. Adjust walking duration to age, condition and weather rather than treating a breed label as an exercise prescription.

Keep the coat's natural structure

ENCI's commentary highlights the straight, firm outer hair standing away from the body. The coat is not meant to resemble soft cotton or acquire its outline through a round haircut. An attractive surface should not conceal a tangled undercoat.

For home care, divide the coat into manageable areas and check that a comb can travel through without pulling. Watch places where equipment rubs or neighbouring surfaces meet. Introduce handling, paw checks and brief relaxed grooming before tangles develop. Show preparation and daily hygiene serve different purposes; at home the aim is comfortable skin and a manageable coat, not a permanently staged photograph.

Eye health and the role of PLL testing

UC Davis lists the Volpino among breeds suitable for its primary lens luxation test. PLL involves displacement of the eye's lens and can cause pain and loss of sight. A DNA result concerns the tested variant; examining the eyes remains a separate task.

Redness, pain or a sudden change in vision deserves veterinary assessment regardless of pedigree. When considering a puppy, distinguish the parents' laboratory results from the puppy's current eye health. If a breeder offers only the phrase 'genetically clear', establish what was tested and how the sample was linked to the named dog. A broad reassurance is less informative than a clearly identified result.

Choosing the right household

Consider the Volpino if you enjoy a small, involved companion and can work consistently on responses to sounds. If quiet is a strict requirement, spend time with adult dogs in an ordinary home before committing. A conversation beside a show ring does not reveal what an evening with neighbours and visitors looks like.

Watching a walk, resting time and grooming is more useful than watching several impressive tricks. Explore how the puppy was raised and introduced to a household environment. The actual routines of a family and the quality of early experiences say more about a possible match than a promise that the breed suits everyone.
