A Spitz stud contract: what owners should agree

Before a Spitz mating, put the service, expenses and arrangements for different outcomes in writing. The word guarantee leaves too many questions unless it is defined. This is an organisational checklist for owners, not a universal contract or legal advice.

Owners discuss written arrangements beside their Pomeranians

Define what the arrangement includes

Identify the dogs and participants, the proposed mating method and each person's responsibilities. Clarify whether a repeat meeting, specialist assistance, testing and paperwork are included in the amount discussed or paid separately.

FCI recommends agreeing financial obligations in writing before breeding. In practice, both owners should understand what is paid for, when payment is due and which outcome changes the arrangement. If a phrase can be read in two ways, ask each person to describe one concrete example of how it would work.

Separate the fee from the expected outcome

Record what is being paid for: the use of a particular stud, a procedure or another agreed service. Discuss separately how the outcome will be confirmed. Avoid leaving successful mating or live litter undefined.

Clarify which pregnancy information will be shared with the stud owner, who will provide it and when. Agreeing the necessary record and contact is enough for planning; the dog's entire medical history need not be circulated to everyone in a group conversation.

Repeat mating terms when pregnancy does not occur

Discuss whether a repeat is offered and which expenses it covers. Can it be postponed on veterinary advice? What happens if the selected male is unavailable? Is a different male an option, and who must agree? Free does not answer questions about travel, clinic work or tests.

Consider other outcomes separately: a confirmed pregnancy followed by loss, a single puppy or no live puppies. These are different situations. An arrangement made for one should not be assumed to cover all of them.

List expenses and cancellation arrangements

Build a budget by item rather than giving it one total. Mark costs that cannot be recovered and spending that can still be avoided. Agree how quickly owners will communicate illness, changed plans or cancellation. Care for the mother should not depend on future puppy sales.

  • Stud fee and any repeat meeting arrangement.
  • Clinic procedures, tests and specialist assistance.
  • Travel, accommodation or semen transport.
  • Paperwork and other explicitly agreed services.
  • A reserve for unplanned veterinary care.

Keep an agreed final version

Save the agreed wording and a method for approving changes. Both owners should hold the same text, a clear document list and an urgent contact. Before signing an actual contract, particularly for an international arrangement or an unusual payment structure, seek review from someone qualified in the applicable law.
