Choosing a Giant German Spitz deserves time spent with the dogs themselves. An attractive white or dark outline says little about the companion who will live with you. Meet an adult Großspitz indoors and outside, and discuss visitors, grooming, walks and how the dog shares daily family life.

Großspitz and Wolfsspitz are different designations
The current standard published by the breed club gives Großspitz as 45±5 cm. It is a separate variety from Wolfsspitz/Keeshond. Large in an advert may simply describe the seller's impression, so check the pedigree designation. This is height at the withers, with the same range for both sexes.
Do not identify a variety from size or colour alone. Request the original record for an imported dog and clarification from the receiving club before show plans. For an adult dog, its registration history is more useful than a guess based on a photograph beside a person.
History explains the watchdog discussion
Verein für Deutsche Spitze describes the Großspitz's connection with home and family and recalls black dogs working in Württemberg vineyards. That provides context, not a promise of a trained protector or permission to leave a dog guarding independently.
Turn interest in that history into useful questions: how does this dog meet people, move away when asked and settle after an event? Do not select a puppy for the sharpest response to a stranger. A family home needs manageable everyday interactions.
A garden is not a daily routine
At a house, inspect fencing, gates and a waiting area for visitor arrivals. Agree who manages the dog during deliveries or work in the garden. Do not expect a tall fence to resolve every behaviour question.
Plan time with people, resting arrangements and walks beyond the property. In an apartment, make the equivalent assessment of the entrance and lift. Evaluate the actual family day rather than assuming either the word house or apartment establishes suitability.
Connect walking, training and transport
Choose quiet routes and training locations without constant visitor traffic. Include door manners, lead walking, returning to you and appropriate car behaviour. Choose goals that every household member understands in the same way.
Match activity to age and health; being larger than a Pomeranian does not justify an automatic demand for hours of running. Identify who can walk an adult dog if the usual owner is ill. Suitable transport and a backup plan matter for clinic visits as well as holidays.
Understand the coat work
The club profile describes the Großspitz's double coat. Request a complete care demonstration and consider whether the work and adult dog's size suit you. Look at ordinary photographs as well as professionally prepared appearances.
Set aside a grooming space and tool storage. Ask what to do between appointments and when professional help is appropriate. A promise of an easy coat is not a usable instruction: you need a clear sequence and the ability to carry it out comfortably at home.
Check the health evidence
The German breed club's 2024 regulations include radiographic hip assessment for Großspitz breeding approval. This is an example of a particular club programme; check your organisation's current process before purchase or breeding.
Request each parent's result, identifiers and the puppy's medical history. Establish who interpreted the investigations and how to verify the report. Do not repeat a promise that the breed never has joint problems: records are more useful than that claim. Arrange the individual dog's care with your vet.
Decide whether to keep exploring
The Großspitz is worth meeting if your household can commit to walks, grooming and consistent visitor management. If the aim is solely an outdoor alarm, reconsider what the dog's life would involve. Visit several owners, ask about difficult weekdays as well as strengths, and budget your time. Make the decision for the adult dog and its whole life with you.
